Racial inequality in the contemporary global order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Call for papers for panel at the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devstud.org.uk\/conferences\/2018\/\"><strong>Development Studies Association annual conference<\/strong><\/a><strong>, University of Manchester, June 27th-29th<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Global apartheid? Racial inequality in the contemporary global order<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThis panel invites papers that address the theme of racial inequality in the contemporary global order. Since the 1970s, the concept of &#8220;global apartheid&#8221; has informed much research and activism on this theme, based upon the claim that inequality on a global scale is structured around a colonial axis and what Howard Winant referred to as &#8220;a centuries-old pattern of white supremacy&#8221;. However, a number of scholars have begun to question the continued relevance of this global apartheid model, particularly in the wake of recent global political, economic and cultural changes (eg Dunaway and Clelland, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to papers that examine the theme of global racial or ethnic inequality more broadly, this panel is therefore particularly interested in papers that address the following kinds of questions: to what extent do we continue to live in a world characterised by a form of &#8220;global apartheid&#8221;? How useful is this phrase (and was it ever useful) as a way of conceptualising global inequality &#8211; both empirically and politically?
